Wearing a wig for the first time may seem complicated, but the process becomes much easier once you understand the basic steps.
Whether you are wearing a human hair wig or a synthetic wig, correct preparation and positioning can improve comfort, security and the overall appearance of the hairline.
Step 1: Prepare Your Natural Hair
Your natural hair should be as flat and even as possible underneath the wig.
Short hair can usually be brushed backwards and secured close to the scalp. Longer hair can be braided, wrapped or divided into flat sections.
Avoid creating large bumps at the back or sides of the head, as these may affect the shape and fit of the wig.
Step 2: Put On a Wig Cap
A wig cap helps keep your natural hair in place and creates a smoother base.
Place the wig cap over your head and gently move all loose hair underneath it. Make sure the cap is comfortable and does not sit too tightly around the hairline.
Some people prefer a wig cap that matches their skin tone, especially when wearing a lace front wig with a visible parting area.

Step 3: Prepare the Wig
Before putting on the wig, hold it by the cap rather than pulling on the hair or lace.
Check the adjustable straps, combs and internal construction. Loosen the straps slightly before the first fitting. You can tighten them after the wig is positioned correctly.
For longer wigs, gently brush the ends before wearing. Begin at the bottom and gradually work upwards to reduce tangling.
Step 4: Position the Wig
Hold the wig with the front hairline facing forward.
Place the front of the wig near your natural hairline and gently pull the cap over the back of your head. Adjust both sides until the wig sits evenly around the ears.
Use the ear tabs or side sections as a guide. They should sit at approximately the same height on both sides.
Do not position the wig too far down the forehead. A wig placed too low can make the hairline look less natural.

Step 5: Adjust the Fit
Once the wig is in place, adjust the internal straps until it feels secure but comfortable.
The wig should not slide when you move your head, but it should also not cause pressure or discomfort.
Some wigs include internal combs or clips. These can be used for additional security, but they should be attached gently to avoid pulling on your natural hair.
Step 6: Trim the Lace Carefully
Some lace front wigs arrive with excess lace around the front hairline.
Before trimming, position the wig correctly and identify how much lace needs to be removed. Take the wig off and use small, sharp scissors to trim gradually.
Avoid cutting in one perfectly straight line. A slightly irregular trimming pattern can help the lace blend more naturally with the hairline.
Do not cut too close to the individual hairs, as this may damage the lace or cause shedding.
Customers who are not confident trimming lace should consider asking an experienced wig stylist for assistance.

Step 7: Secure the Wig
Glueless wigs may be secured using adjustable straps, elastic bands, combs or clips.
Other lace wigs may be worn with wig tape, adhesive or a holding product. Always follow the product instructions and test adhesives on a small area of skin before full application.
Avoid applying adhesive directly to natural hair. It should be used carefully around clean skin near the hairline.
Step 8: Style the Wig
Once the wig is secure, adjust the parting and gently style the hair.
For human hair wigs, use suitable wig-care or colour-safe products. Heat styling may be possible depending on the product, but excessive heat can dry or damage the hair.
Synthetic wigs should only be heat-styled when the fibres are specifically described as heat-resistant. Always follow the recommended care instructions for the individual wig.
Avoid applying heavy oils or products close to the lace, as residue may affect the appearance of the hairline.
How to Remove a Wig
Never pull a secured lace wig directly from the hairline.
If adhesive or tape has been used, apply an appropriate remover and allow enough time for the product to loosen. Gently lift the lace a little at a time.
After removal, clean any residue from the lace carefully and place the wig on a suitable stand.
Final Tips for First-Time Wig Wearers
It may take a few attempts to find the best position and fit. Practise wearing the wig at home before using it for a full day or special event.
Correct hair preparation, cap adjustment and gentle handling will help the wig feel more secure and look more natural.
