How to Wear a Wig: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

Wearing a wig correctly can help it feel more comfortable, secure and natural. Whether you are wearing a wig for the first time or simply want a smoother fit, follow these easy steps.

Step 1: Prepare Your Natural Hair

Brush or comb your natural hair to remove any tangles.

If your hair is long, tie it into a low ponytail, braid it or pin it flat against your head. Try to distribute the hair evenly so there are no large bumps underneath the wig.

Step 2: Put On a Wig Cap

Stretch the wig cap open with both hands and place it over your head.

Gently tuck all of your natural hair underneath the cap, including any loose hair around the sides and nape of your neck. Adjust the cap so it sits comfortably behind your natural hairline.

Step 3: Prepare the Wig

Hold the wig by the sides or the inner cap. Avoid pulling directly on the lace, hair fibres or adjustable straps.

Before putting it on, check that the wig is facing the correct direction. The front hairline or fringe should face forward, while the adjustable straps should sit at the back.

Step 4: Put On the Wig

Place the front of the wig near your natural hairline and gently pull the rest of the cap over the back of your head.

Hold the wig securely while positioning it. Avoid pulling too hard, especially if you are wearing a lace front wig.

Step 5: Adjust the Fit

Align the wig with your natural hairline and make sure the ear tabs sit evenly on both sides.

Use the adjustable straps at the back of the cap to tighten or loosen the fit. The wig should feel secure but should not cause pressure or discomfort.

Step 6: Tuck In Loose Hair

Check around the ears and nape of your neck for any natural hair that may still be visible.

Carefully tuck any loose strands underneath the wig cap and adjust the edges of the wig.

Step 7: Style Your Wig

Once the wig is secure, gently style it with your fingers, a wide-tooth comb or a suitable wig brush.

Start from the ends and work upwards to reduce tangling and unnecessary pulling. Avoid brushing lace, knots or the base of the wig too firmly.

Helpful Tips

For the most natural result, make sure the wig is centred and the hairline sits in the correct position.

Do not tighten the adjustable straps too much. A wig that is overly tight may feel uncomfortable and can place unnecessary pressure around the hairline.

For lace front wigs, handle the lace carefully and avoid pulling or stretching it when putting the wig on.

If you plan to use adhesive, wig tape or styling products, always follow the product instructions and perform a skin test where recommended.
